What is S.510? This is a bill to amend the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act with respect to the safety of the food supply. On March 3, 2009, the bill was introduced and Referred to Committee. On November 18, 2009, it was reported by Committee. The next step in the process is the Senate Vote, then the House Vote and finally to be signed by the President.
The Senate appears poised to act on its version of the food safety bill, which will modernize food inspections by the Food and Drug Administration, and give it mandatory recall authority. The six Senators who negotiated the final package announced on Aug. 12 that final language and the Congressional Budget Office analysis were completed.
Sen. Tom Harkin, chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee unveiled the “manager’s amendment,” a bipartisan agreement on final language that has been worked out by Sens. Mike Enzil, the committee’s top Republican; Dick Durbin (D., Ill.), who was the original author of the bill, Judd Gregg (R., N. H.), Chris Dodd (D., Conn.) and Richard Burr (R., N.C.).The original version of the bill was passed by the HELP committee on a unanimous vote last November. Senators who negotiated the final package pledged to pressure both the Democratic and Republican Senate leaders for rapid floor action.
The House version of the FDA food safety reform bill is passed and awaiting Senate action. Why you should care? If passed:
- All US food and all US farms will be under Homeland Security and the Department of Defense.
- End US sovereignty over it's own food supply by insisting on compliance with the World Trade Organization (WTO).
- It would remove the right to clean, store and thus own seed in the US.
- It begins the final destruction of the US economy.
"If people let the government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny." - Thomas Jefferson
